\nThe continuation of this repressive policy will place Algeria before the international community and the United Nations with full responsibility for its actions. Unless this course is reversed, it is likely to result in increasing scrutiny and accountability at both the human rights and diplomatic levels. Freedom of association and trade union rights are not privileges granted by the authorities; they are fundamental rights guaranteed by international instruments and cannot be curtailed or negotiated away.
\nWe call on all international trade union organizations and human rights bodies to stand immediately and firmly alongside Algerian workers and to reject any silence or complicity with policies aimed at silencing independent voices. Remaining silent today would mean overlooking a violation that could tomorrow be inflicted upon other groups as well.<\/p>\n
